Domaine Papagiannakos
Located in Attica, central Greece, Papagiannakos Winery is renowned for its long tradition of producing Retsina, one of
Greece’s most emblematic wines.
Founded in 1919, just a century after Greece’s independence in 1828, the winery continued to produce Retsina until the
third generation, Vassilis Papagiannakos, began to vinify still wines from the Savatiano variety. He became a true pioneer,
inspiring other producers in Attica to recognize the great potential of Savatiano.
Attica is known as Greece’s hottest and driest wine region, yet the vineyards here are cooled by constant winds sweeping between four surrounding mountains and two coastal bays. Among the vines are old plantings of 50 to over 100 years,
which give rise to the estate’s flagship wine, “Savatiano Old Vines.”
In 2007, Papagiannakos Winery built Greece’s first bioclimatic winery, achieving a 25% reduction in energy consumption.
